A Taste of Central Europe - Part 2

So what else did we eat in Europe that was absolutely fantabulous other than goulash, currywurst and dumplings? Well I think that I have to mention the schnitzels. The schnitzels in Germany are really just pork that has been pounded into a thing steak. But the schnitzels in Austria are fantastic! You can order what type of meat you want - veal, chicken or pork - and they are crumbed which is the traditional Vienna style - thus Wiener schnitzels. These were amazing each time we had them and they are served with lemon to squeeze over the top, NOT with gravy! I had never had schnitzel this way but it tasted superb. But I must say that these traditional schnitzels did not compare to the Ljubljana style steak that Nathan ate when we were in Slovenia. These are what I like to call a mega schnitzel. There is the veal covered with a layer of ham and then a layer of cheese. Then the whole stack is crumbed and cooked and it is possibly the fantastic schnitzel that I have ever tried. These are also served with lemon to squeeze over the top.

We did eat so many more main meals that were fantastic such as spinach dumplings and mountain sauce, traditional Hungarian paprika chicken and so may soups but I really feel that it is time to move onto desserts! Firstly we have the Sacher Torte that we bought from the Hotel Sacher in Salzburg. These cakes are just absolutely delightful. We also tried Sacher Torte from other non-authentic places and they never tasted quite the same as the original. I am determined to try this at home and get the chocolatey/apricot taste just perfect. We also had a traditional cake in Slovenia which was layers of poppy seeds, apple strudel, walnuts and mascarpone which was so delicious. I even drew a diagram of this one so I can get it just right when I try making one at home. Some other cakes that I drew diagrams of are the Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella cakes that we ate at the Hansel and Gretel restaurant in Croatia. These were amazing! They were not traditional cakes at all just some lovely desserts that they had invented to go with the whole fairy tale theme of the restaurant. Actually the whole restaurant was fantastic with delicious food and brilliant service and cheap by Australian standards. I would definitely recommend going there if you happen to be in Zagreb. And I will finish with a gorgeous dessert we ate in Salzburg called a black and white mousse. This was dark chocolate mousse and white chocolate mousse served with cream and it was amazing. I have eaten so much mousse in my life and have never had mousse like this before. The white chocolate mousse was particularly impressive - it managed to be light and rich and creamy and delicate all at the same time. I was in heaven!!!

Stay tuned as in my next and final European instalment I'll tell you all about the wonderful drinks we had that seem to be unique to Europe :)
