I remember the first time I had french toast, it was when I was in my third year of uni and I had gone to Taiwan for as part of my internship. After some terrible experiences with kiwi fruit and vegemite sandwiches, pigs trotters (when I thought I had ordered potatoes), and many different (or the same who knows) unidentifiable meat dishes I was craving some western food. Then I found this little bakery cafe and the only thing on the menu that sounded vaguely familiar was french toast. And it was delicious! I couldn't believe I hadn't tried it before. When I got back to Australia I learnt how to make it and realised it is one of the easiest things ever to make! I have made it a million times since and so I am sharing it now with you all:
Ingredients ~
- 4 thick slices of bread (I used home made bread Nath had made, but any type you like will do)
- 4 eggs
- ~ 1/4 cup milk
- ~ 1/4 cup pure cream
- butter, for frying
- cinnamon sugar
- rockmelon, to serve
- maple syrup, to serve
To Make ~
- Whisk the eggs up and then add cream and milk. Add enough so you have enough liquid to cover the four slices of bread. Whisk it all together.
- Add a good shake of cinnamon sugar and whisk to combine.
- Put a frying pan on high heat and melt about a teaspoon of butter. Dip two slices of bread into the egg mix. Allow any excess to drain off and then put in the frypan.
- Fry on each side until the egg has set (about 30-60 seconds each side).
- Remove from pan and repeat with the two remaining slices of bread.
- Serve with rock melon and maple syrup.
You could use any fresh fruit you like and it will taste amazing. Thank you Tehani for the authentic Canadian maple syrup. |
