Shepard's Pie

Has anyone had to watch that irritating cooking show that is on in the middle of the day called "Alive and Cooking"? It has an irritating song, irritating graphics and an irritating chef! Anyway the other week I was sick and was sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's and this show was on. My appointment was an hour late and so lucky me got to watch a whole episode of "Alive and Cooking". The main recipe was a cottage pie or shepard's pie... I can't remember - they are very similar. But I do remember that I thought the way he cooked it was absolutely dreadful and ever since have been hanging out to cook shepard's pie. And by me I really mean Nathan as this recipe is more his speciality than mine.  Here is Nathan's recipe:

Ingredients ~
  • 1/2 brown onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • olive oil
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 large field mushroom, chopped coarsely
  • tomato sauce
  • worcestershire sauce t taste
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • italian herbs
  • 2 tsp butter
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method Mince ~
  • Saute the garlic and onion in a pan over medium heat. Add mince and brown.
  • Then add worcestershire sauce (about 1 1/2 tablespoons is yum), stock cube, carrot and mushroom. Cook until carrot is soft.
  • Then add enough tomato sauce to coat everything.
  • Spread in a pan.

Method Topping ~
  • Steam potato until soft.
  • Mash the potato.
  • Add butter and milk, salt and pepper to taste and mix until smooth.

Method Pie ~
  • Top mince with mashed potato.
  • Sprinkle with Italian herbs.
  • Cook in 200 degree oven for about 10-15mins or until potato starts to go crispy.
