Zen Yai - Review

Last night I went out with friends for my birthday dinner at Zen Yai in Civic, Canberra. We used to go to this restaurant all the time but had not been in about a year - and it was fantastic! The food was absolutely delicious last night and served piping hot. We ordered the mixed entree; wontons, curry puff, springs rolls and fish cakes served with hand made sweet chilli - delicious! The fishcakes in particular were a stand out with a lovely lemon grass flavour through them.

Onto mains: there are are several rice options but mine (and most peoples) favourite is the coconut rice. In the past this has been a bit hit and miss but last night it was absolutely perfect - hot, fluffy, creamy and coconutty - yum! Several people ordered the trusty "Number 56" which is satay chicken and could be the best satay chicken I have ever had. I branched out and got  the "Number 43" - the mussaman  curry. This was divine with the beef being so soft and tender and falling apart in my mouth. I also tried the Phad Ka Pow with chicken - I unfortunately can't remember the handy number for this main - but Nathan somehow remembered the actual name and spelling. This meal can also be ordered with beef or duck (Nathan had the duck). Anyway the Phad Ka Pow was amazing - fresh and filled with lovely greens, thai basil and chilli. This is a little on the spicy side though so if spice is not your thing I recommend you go with the trusty Number 56.

There was great conversation, many laughs, a happy fact that for once we were not the noisiest table in the restaurant and to top it all off there was birthday cake! The lights were turned off and the whole restaurant sung happy birthday. The cake was an amazing pink velvet cake baked by my friend Katie - yum! Stay tuned for the next post for more info on the pink velvet cake :)
